Wood off to a rough start following excellent 2017 campaign
Alex Wood (illness) was able to make his start Wednesday against the Athletics but he was hammered for seven earned runs and seven hits with five strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings in a loss.
Wood had his start pushed back a day after a bout with food poisoning, but he was reportedly feeling better. Perhaps he needed another day, as he didn’t bring his best stuff and was tattooed early and often. Last season he didn’t lose his second game until Sept. 3, but so far this season he is 0-2 with a 5.09 ERA across three outings.
Padres’ Mitchell coming off shaky start vs. Giants
Bryan Mitchell walked five while surrendering three runs on four hits over three innings in Thursday’s loss to the Giants.
While Mitchell was able to keep the Giants from bludgeoning him out of existence — all three runs on his line scored in the first inning — he was unable to provide any sort of length due to his issues finding the plate. Mitchell threw just 32 of his 61 pitches for strikes before taking his relatively early exit. His lack of control has shown itself in every one of his three starts to date, as he’s now walked 14 batters in just 13 2/3 frames. He’ll carry a bloated 5.27 ERA and 2.12 WHIP into Tuesday night.
MLB Betting Trends
Los Angeles
The Dodgers are 58-27 in their last 85 games versus the Padres overall.
San Diego
The Padres are 8-17 in their last 25 games overall and have dropped nine of their last 13 home games.
Prediction:
This game should be high-scoring given the pitching matchup and trends. The over is 4-0 in the last four meetings in San Diego and is 17-5-2 in the last 24 meetings between these two teams overall. Both of these pitchers are off to shaky starts and have had issues with walks. More walks mean more baserunners and more base runners should equate to more runs scored.
The Pick: Dodgers/Padres over 7.5
