Angels’ Barria throws 5 2/3 scoreless innings vs. Tigers

Jaime Barria limited Detroit to five hits over 5 2/3 innings of scoreless ball Wednesday in a 6-0 Angels victory. Barria registered five strikeouts and one walk over 92 pitches. Of the five hits he allowed, only one—Jeimer Candelario’s leadoff double in the fourth—went for extra bases. Barria has impressed as a rookie, contributing a respectable 3.59 ERA across 87 2/3 innings. There’s room for improvement—his strikeout rate has been subpar (6.57 K/9) and he’s lasted longer than six innings on just one occasion. But considering his age (he just turned 22), the right-hander has been excellent.

Padres’ Kennedy lit up in Major League Debut by Brewers

Brett Kennedy was pounded for six runs and three homers in four innings by the Brewers in his major league debut Wednesday. Kennedy was given a tough assignment his first time out, facing the powerful Brewers lineup in Miller Park. He’ll get another chance to show what he can do at home against the Angels next week. If he’s not better then, the Padres could consider going in a different direction.

MLB Betting Trends

Los Angeles

The Angels are 3-7 in Barria’s last 10 starts.

San Diego

The Padres have dropped 37 of their last 53 interleague games.

Prediction:

The Padres are an abysmal 4-17 in their last 21 home games, are 2-9 in their last 11 home games versus a right-handed starter, and are 17-36 in their last 53 games versus American League West opponents. On the other side, the Angels are 5-2 in their last seven games overall, are 10-2 in their last 12 road games versus a team with a home winning percentage less than .400, and have an advantage versus Kennedy.

The Pick: Los Angeles Angels -112
