Giants now co-favorites with Cubs to win World Series after signing Cueto

Giants sign Cueto, co-favored to win WS

While the deal is still pending a physical, the Giants have reportedly signed free-agent pitcher Johnny Cueto to a six-year, $130 million contract.

ESPN’s Buster Olney was the first to report the deal, which supposedly has an opt-out clause after the 2017 season. The Giants also have a club option for a seventh year, so in all likelihood, Cueto won’t spend the entire length of the contract in San Francisco.

Cueto was inconsistent last season after being traded from the Reds to the Royals, but he did help Kansas City win the World Series and has a 2.71 ERA over 134 starts across his last five seasons. He’ll join a revamped starting rotation in San Francisco, one that also features ace Madison Bumgarner and newly signed Jeff Samardzija. Jake Peavy and former ace Matt Cain are expected to fill-out the rest of the rotation.

Oddsmakers have taken notice of the Giants’ moves and have updated San Francisco’s odds to win the World Series in 2016. According to oddsmakers from online sports book Mybookie.ag, the Giants and Cubs are now co-favored at 6/1 to win next season’s Fall Classic. The Red Sox have the next best odds at 9/1, followed by the Mets at 10/1.
