Rockies’ Marquez allows six runs in just 3 1/3 innings vs. Cubs
German Marquez allowed eight hits and six runs while lasting just 3 1/3 innings Sunday against the Cubs. Marquez hit Kris Bryant in the helmet with a pitch just a few batters into the game, which speaks to his command issues and could explain why he lacked focus as the game wore on, as he was visibly upset by the incident.
Command problems are nothing new for Marquez, who has now walked 13 in 22 innings of work this year. That has contributed to his 6.14 ERA and 1.59 WHIP through five starts. An easier assignment awaits Marquez on Saturday when the Rockies visit the Marlins.
Marlins’ Smith strikes out 10 vs. Brewers
Caleb Smith struck out a career-high 10 while allowing two runs over six innings in a loss to the Brewers on Sunday. Smith was dominant save for a two-batter stretch to begin the fourth inning, when Lorenzo Cain singled ahead of a Christian Yelich two-run homer.
Those were the only two hits Smith allowed, and he didn’t walk a batter. It’s a shame his brilliance didn’t net him his first win, but such is life as a Marlin in 2018. Smith will look to replicate his success, with a better result, Saturday against the Rockies.
MLB Betting Trends
Colorado
The Rockies are 6-13 in their last 19 games versus the Marlins and 3-10 in their last 13 games in Miami.
Miami
The Marlins are winless in Smith’s last four starts and are just 1-8 in their last nine home games regardless of the starter.
Prediction:
Any time I see Smith’s name listed as the Marlins’ starter I can’t shake the outing he had against the Yankees in New York a few weeks ago when he was torched. Having said that, I’m going to take a flier on Miami. The Rockies will need a solid outing from Marquez, who has been awful this season. They’ll need innings after Tyler Anderson left Friday’s game early after just 1 1/3 innings. Smith is coming off a dominant 10-strikeout game against the Brewers and he’s pitching in a pitcher-friendly park.
The Pick: Miami Marlins +105
