Diamondbacks’ Corbin strikes out 11 vs. Padres in last start
Patrick Corbin struck out 11 Padres over six innings, allowing two runs in 4-2 win Sunday. Corbin has been the biggest revelation of the 2018 season, and the latest chapter was written Sunday. The southpaw baffled the Padres over his six innings, allowing just two hits and a walk, and a two-run homer by the red-hot Christian Villanueva in the sixth inning was the only mark against him.
He’s now struck out 8-12-9-8-11 in his five starts, leading the National League — you know, the league with Clayton Kershaw, Max Scherzer and Noah Syndergaard — with 48 strikeouts. He leads the league in pretty much every other pitching category as well. Corbin will carry a 1.89 ERA and 0.66 WHIP into Saturday’s matchup with the Nationals.
Nationals’ Hellickson falls apart in sixth inning of last start
Jeremy Hellickson was handed his first loss of the season on Sunday, allowing three runs on three hits over 5 1/3 innings against the Dodgers. Hellickson allowed a double to Corey Seager in the first inning, then kept the Dodgers at bay until the sixth, at one point retiring 14 consecutive hitters.
The Dodgers finally broke through in the sixth, using three doubles to score three times and chase Hellickson from the game. He’ll carry a 4.50 ERA and 1.30 WHIP into Saturday’s matchup against the Diamondbacks.
MLB Betting Trends
Arizona
The Diamondbacks are 43-21 in their last 64 games overall and are 5-1 in Corbin’s last six starts.
Washington
The Nationals have dropped five of their last six games and are 1-5 in their last six home outings.
Prediction:
Corbin is a stud. Through 33 1/3 innings of work, Corbin has struck out 48 batters and owns a 39.3 strikeout rate, which is outstanding. He generates soft contact and if he can work around Bryce Harper then he should be fine. Hellickson has been serviceable but I can’t shake how bad he was a year ago. I like the D-Backs again today.
The Pick: Arizona Diamondbacks -135
