Ray looking to build off nine-strikeout performance
Robbie Ray flat dominated the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium last Thursday. He struck out nine batters over six innings of one-run ball in a 3-1 win. Granted, he did walk five batters on the night but surrendered just two hits en route to his second win of the season. It was a much better showing for Ray then his season debut when he allowed six earned runs against the Rockies.
A couple of Arizona hitters to watch today are Paul Goldschmidt and A.J. Pollock. Goldschmidt finished 2-for-4 with a solo home run, a walk and two runs scored in last night’s loss to the Giants. His solo home run into the left-center field seats off closer Hunter Strickland briefly tied the game in the ninth inning. Pollock, meanwhile, went 1-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a stolen base in the loss.
After slow start, McCutchen fitting in well with San Francisco Giants
Andrew McCutchen went 1-for-3 with a pair of walks, a run scored and two RBI in last night’s 5-4 victory over the Diamondbacks. One of those RBI was a walk-off in the bottom of the ninth inning. It was his second walk-off hit since last Saturday when he went deep against the Dodgers for a game-winning, three-run home run. He struggled in ihs first six games but has adjusted quickly. ‘Cutch’ has hit safely in three of his last four games.
Meanwhile, left-hander Andrew Suarez has joined the team in San Francisco and will pitch today’s matinee against the Diamondbacks. He’s needed because of Johnny Cueto’s ankle, which landed him on the disabled list on Tuesday night. The Giants have been decimated by injuries to their starting pitching but to their credit, they’ve managed to tread water in the early going.
Betting Trends:
Arizona
The Diamondbacks are 8-3 in their last 11 games versus the Giants overall and are 4-0 in Ray’s last four starts versus San Francisco.
San Francisco
The Giants are just 33-69 in their last 102 games following a win and have dropped five of their last seven games when playing the third game of a series.
Today’s Prediction
Jump on Arizona’s price before it goes up. Ray should dominate these San Francisco hitters and should be able to get to Suarez early. Despite last night’s loss, the D-Backs have won six of their last eight games, are 20-6 in their last 26 games versus a left-handed starter, and are 12-3 in their last 15 contests when playing the third game of a series.
Pick: Arizona Diamondbacks -129
