Arizona Diamondbacks Continue To Receive Excellent Pitching
Zack Godley was outstanding on Monday night in San Francisco, pitching seven shutout innings in a 2-1 victory over the Giants. He struck out nine, allowed only four hits and didn’t walk a single batter. Godley is coming off a breakout campaign in 2017 and is off to an excellent start this year, with his ERA sitting at a microscopic 0.64.
The Diamondbacks will hand the ball tonight to another starter that is dominating in the early going. Patrick Corbin allowed just one hit over 7 1/3 shutout innings versus the Dodgers last Wednesday. He did walk one batter but struck out 12 batters. He struck out five of the first six hitters while flirting with a perfect game until Matt Kemp broke things up in the fifth.
San Francisco Giants to start former first-round pick tonight
The Giants recalled right-hander Tyler Beede from High-A San Jose to make his major league debut. Johnny Cueto had his next start pushed back to Wednesday after he tweaked his ankle in a start last week against the Mariners. Beede is a former first-round pick and had a strong first start this season for High-A San Jose, although he posted a 4.79 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP over 109 innings last season at the Triple-A level. It’s likely he’ll start tonight and then get sent right back down.
It’ll be nice if the offense backs up Beede tonight but Brandon Belt struck out four times last night versus Godley as the Giants were held to one run or fewer for the sixth time in nine games to start the season. Yikes.
MLB Betting Trends
Arizona
The Diamondbacks are 8-2 in their last 10 games versus the Giants but are just 2-5 in Corbin’s last seven road starts against San Francisco.
San Francisco
The Giants are just 1-4 in their last five games against the rest of the National League West and are 2-5 in their last seven games overall after starting the year 2-0.
Prediction:
I realize I’m taking a risk given how punchless this Giants’ offense has been to start the season but I like the over tonight, which is catching plus odds (+105) at 8. The reason? Beede could get hammered in his first start. He had underwhelming numbers at the Triple-A level last year so why anyone would think he’ll light up a major league team doesn’t make sense. If the Giants can’t contribute a little bit with the bats, I see this being a 6-3 game and cashing the over for bettors. Perhaps Buster Posey will take Corbin deep at some point.
The Pick: Diamondbacks/Giants over 8 (+105)
