Mets 2011 MLB Season Odds
(The Spread) – At least on paper, it looks like the New York Mets can contend in 2011. But their pitching will be the thing that holds them back this season.

Oddsmakers from online sports book SBGGLOBAL.com have made the Mets +6000 on the money line to win the 2011 World Series and +3000 to win the NL East. New York also has an over/under total of 76.5 for number of wins in 2011.
Offseason Additions: The Mets committed most of their offseason to acquiring arms for the bullpen. The club added right-handers D.J. Carrasco and Taylor Buchholz, as well as left-hander Tim Byrdak. Former Padres’ Chris Young and Scott Hairston were also added, as well as catcher Ronny Paulino, Chin-lung Hu and Willie Harris.
Offseason Losses: The Mets didn’t lose any player of substance unless you think John Maine, Fernando Tatis, Pedro Feliciano, Sean Green and Henry Blanco are “substance.” The club also dumped manager Jerry Manuel and GM Omar Minaya.
Season Outlook: When guys like Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran are healthy, the Mets have a solid lineup. But that’s just it: guys like Reyes and Beltran can’t stay healthy. It would be nice if Jason Bay could bounce back from a horrible first season in New York as well. Of course, the biggest problem is the pitching. While the Mets were busy going after free agents like Bay and Francisco Rodriguez, they completely ignored their starting pitching staff after Johan Santana. And seeing as how he won’t be ready to pitch until June or July, the staff is an even bigger question mark. Mike Pelfrey is decent, but he’s not a top of the rotation arm. Jon Niese is okay and Young was a nice free agent pickup but he’s never pitched over 179 innings in a season. The bottom line is that this club has way too many question marks. Can the position players stay healthy? Can the pitching staff survive without Santana? Will K-Rod punch another potential family member? This is not a team that can contend with the Phillies and Braves in the NL East.
