According to online sports book Sportsbook.com, the Yankees are +600 to win the 2011 World Series and +200 to win the American League East. The Bombers also have an over/under total of 91.5 wins this season.
Offseason Additions: The Yankees strengthened their bullpen by adding reliever Rafael Soriano and tried to make up for losing out on Cliff Lee by signing starters Freddy Garcia and Bartolo Colon. They also added Russell Martin, Andruw Jones, Pedro Feliciano and Mark Prior.
Offseason Losses: The Bombers’ biggest loss this offseason was starter Andy Pettitte, who decided to retire after weeks of speculation. The team also parted ways with Kerry Wood, Javier Vazquez, Lance Berkman and Marcus Thames.
Season Outlook: They’re the Yankees, so you know they’re going to compete. The heart of their lineup consists of Derek Jeter, Mark Teixeira, Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Cano, which might be the best 2-5 in the MLB. But the Bombers’ pitching will decide how far this club goes in 2011. Losing out on Lee and watching Pettitte retire were two huge blows. The club might be high on Ivan Nova and a fifth starter is somewhat overrated so a veteran like Garcia should be fine in that role. But the key is A.J. Burnett, who is coming off a brutal year in which he mentally fell apart. If he can’t produce at the top of the rotation, it puts even more pressure on CC Sabathia and Phil Hughes. Again, this team will compete and they will be in the hunt for a postseason berth all season. But the Red Sox are just flat out better (at least on paper) and is clearly the best team in the AL East at the start of the season. If the Yankees’ pitching holds up, then the battle in this division will be one to watch all season.
New York Yankees 2011 World Series Odds: +600
New York Yankees 2011 AL East Odds: +200
New York Yankees 2011 O/U Totals: 91.5
