After failing to make the postseason, Red Sox’s GM Theo Epstein set out this offseason to overhaul the roster. After losing Victor Martinez to the Tigers, he acquired slugger Adrian Gonzalez via trade with the Padres. He then broke the bank to sign outfielder Carl Crawford, formerly of the Rays.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book SBGGLOBAL.com, the Red Sox are now +200 on the money line to win the 2011 American League Pennant, making them the favorites. The Yankees are +250, while the defending American League champion Rangers are +1000 after losing Cliff Lee to the Phillies.
Speaking of Lee, the Yankees struck out in free agent negotiations with the ace and now their pitching looks incredibly weak. As of this writing, they’re still waiting to hear back from Andy Pettitte on whether or not he’ll retire and if he does, the Bombers’ pitching staff will be in even worse shape than it is right now.
Of course, this is the Yankees we’re talking about. They’re still going to posses one of the best offenses in the entire league, led by Alex Rodriguez, Robinson Cano and Mark Teixeira. They also re-signed captain Derek Jeter, who is getting long in the tooth but should rebound from career-low numbers in 2010.
The Rangers might have a ton of trouble defending their AL crown after losing Lee. Their lineup is still stacked and they added another key bat in free agent Adrian Beltre, but can their pitching hold up without Lee?
