Chad Bettis (1-3, 6.23 ERA) draws the start for Colorado, while Jhoulys Chacin (12-10, 4.12) goes for San Diego. Bettis has a 1.43 WHIP with 23 strikeouts in 34 1/3 innings. He was knocked around his last start, giving up five earned runs on three hits with no strikeouts and three walks while only pitching 0 1/3 of an inning in a 7-0 loss at the Diamondbacks. Chacin has a 1.30 WHIP with 141 strikeouts over 168 1/3 innings. He gave up three earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts and three walks over 4 1/3 innings in a 4-3 win at the Rockies his last start. Chacin has a 1.91 ERA in 94 1/3 home innings.
Colorado comes in with an 83-71 record and is 40-39 on the road, while San Diego is 69-84 and 42-36 at home. The Rockies have won seven of the last 10 meetings and the total has gone over six times.
On Friday, the Rockies snapped a four-game losing streak with a 4-1 win in the second game of the series. Ian Desmond was 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs and an RBI to pace the offense. Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story both had a solo home run. Jon Gray gave up one earned run and struck out eight over six innings to notch the victory. Greg Holland earned his 41st save. Travis Jankowski was 2-for-3 with a run for the Padres. Jordan Lyles surrendered four earned runs in six innings to take the loss.
Chacin has been masterful at home and certainly better than Lyles from the day before. Meanwhile, instead of the ace in Gray going for the Rockies it’s the very hittable Bettis. Colorado obviously needs this win far more, but San Diego would love to play a spoiler on its home field. Go with the Padres.
