Jimmy Nelson (9-6, 3.74 ERA) starts for Milwaukee, while the Giants are going with Jeff Samardzija (8-12, 4.79 ERA). Nelson has not been at his best his last two starts, but his last time out was much better than the previous outing. He has a 1.26 WHIP on the season and 169 strikeouts in 151 2/3 innings. His road ERA is 4.22 in 11 starts. Samardzija has received a win in four of his last five starts, although his ERA of 4.44 in four August starts shows he’s received good run support. He has a 1.21 WHIP plus a 4.48 ERA in 12 home starts. Samardzija also carries a high strikeout rate with 166 in 161 2/3 innings.
Milwaukee comes in with a 65-61 record and is 30-31 on the road, while San Francisco is 51-76 and 30-34 at home. The Giants won the series opener 2-0 and have won three of five in the season series, while the over-under is 2-2-1 in those games.
San Francisco won the series opener via a strong pitching performance from Chris Stratton, giving up four hits in six shutout innings. Jarrett Parker was 2-for-3 with a run and a walk, while Pablo Sandoval had a single and a double. Brandon Crawford added an RBI double. Sam Dyson picked up his 11th save. Zach Davies, took the loss for the Brewers, allowing two unearned runs in six innings. Neil Walker led the offense with a hit and a walk.
This should be a pitcher’s duel and Samardzija has been solid as of late. The Giants might not be a good team, but they are usually competitive at home. Nelson has struggled in his last couple starts, so expect the Giants to win a close one. The under is also in play here.
