Astros’ McCullers’ strikes out 11 but Houston falls to Rangers
Lance McCullers allowed four runs over 5 1/3 innings while striking out 11 in a loss to the Rangers on Sunday. McCullers was sizzling in the first four innings, but he struggled over his final two frames to put a damper on what looked to be a dominant start from the right-hander. Sunday was McCullers’ season in a nutshell, as when he’s been on, he’s been great. When he’s struggled, it can be ugly. His ERA is up to 4.06, but he does have a strong 133 strikeouts in 122 innings. We’ll see him pitch again against the Dodgers on Saturday.
Dodgers’ Maeda allows four runs in loss to Brewers
Kenta Maeda allowed four earned runs over just 4 2/3 innings Monday in a loss to the Brewers. Maeda issued three walks and gave up seven hits, including an RBI single to Travis Shaw in the top of the first inning and a three-run homer to Eric Thames in the top of the third. It was the first loss for Maeda since June. He holds a solid 3.48 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, and 119/35 K/BB ratio in 98 1/3 innings this season. Up next is a start at home against the defending World Series-champion Astros.
