Braves’ Newcomb goes seven strong in win over Nationals
Sean Newcomb limited the Nationals to two runs over seven innings in a win Thursday. Newcomb didn’t bring his strikeout stuff, fanning a season-low two batters, but he kept the Nationals hitters off balance in allowing just four hits and a pair of walks. The win was his sixth in a row, improving him to 6-1 with a 2.73 ERA and 1.21 WHIP through 11 starts. Seven of those 11 have been quality starts. A Tuesday meeting with the lowly Padres offers a chance for Newcomb to run his win streak even higher.
Padres’ Lyles strikes out seven in win over Marlins
Jordan Lyles yielded two runs on six hits over seven innings in Thursday’s win over the Marlins. Lyles struck out seven and walked one in the crisp win. Both runs on his line scored in the second inning on a two-run single by opposing number Wei-Yin Chen. Outside of that knock, though, he kept the scoreboard clean. This was a nice rebound outing for the right-hander, who had been knocked around for nine runs combined in his previous two outings. Lyles will bring a 3.65 ERA and 1.14 WHIP into a home date with the Braves next time he toes the rubber.
