Texas held on for a fifth straight win Thursday afternoon at home versus Seattle to improve to 24-23 overall and 17-8 at home. Adrian Sampson picked up the win as the bulk reliever as he gave up one earned run on four hits with five strikeouts and no walks over 5 1/3 innings. Shawn Kelley earned his fourth save of the season as he gave up one hit and walked one while striking out two over one inning of work. Hunter Pence helped pace the offense as he finished 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored. Nomar Mazara went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Shin-Soo Choo, Logan Forsythe and Asdrubal Cabrera all ended the contest 1-for-3. Drew Smyly will start tonight for the Rangers as he enters with an 0-3 record, 6.51 ERA and 1.73 WHIP with 31 strikeouts over 27 2/3 innings.
Angels blasted by Twins
Los Angeles surrendered eight home runs at home Thursday afternoon in a 16-7 loss to Minnesota. Tommy La Stella helped pace the Angels offense as he finished 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs. Brian Goodwin went 1-for-4 with a solo homer. Mike Trout was 1-for-3 with a double, two walks and a run. Griffin Canning will start today for LA as he comes in with a 2-1 record, 3.80 ERA and 1.08 WHIP with 24 strikeouts over 21 1/3 innings.
MLB Betting Trends
Texas
The Rangers are 1-7 in their last eight Friday games. Texas is 0-4 in the last four Smyly starts versus the AL West.
Seattle
The Angels are 4-1 in their last five series openers. Los Angeles is 8-1 in its last nine home games versus the Rangers.
Prediction:
With Smyly struggling so much to figure it out, this is a prime opportunity for the Angels to turn things around at least for a day. Canning has been sharp lately, coming off seven shutout innings at home against Kansas City. He should be able to keep the bullpen away from this game for six or seven innings, at which point LA will have likely established a lead. If the bridge can be made to closer Hansel Robles, LA should be able to end its losing streak and put a halt to the Rangers’ win streak.
