If you’re looking for an underdog to tail in tonight’s college football action, I’ve got one for ya: Alabama Birmingham.

Seeing as how the Blazers dropped their home opener to Florida Atlantic 32-31 last week, they certainly don’t look like a strong play. Couple that with the fact that SMU gave Texas Tech a game in the second half last Sunday before eventually falling 35-27 would lead some to believe that the Mustangs are the play here.
But consider a couple of things:
– SMU had one less day to prepare for UAB after playing on Sunday.
– The Blazers are 5-1 against the spread vs. a team with a losing record and 4-1 ATS in their last five road games against a team with a losing home record.
– SMU is 4-12 ATS in their last 16 home games and 2-5 ATS in their last seven games after allowing less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game.
Of the 8,000-plus wagers that have currently been placed on this game, 58% of the betting public favors SMU. That’s probably mostly due to the fact that the Mustangs are coming off a strong outing and UAB looked brutal – especially defensively. But there isn’t an 11.5-point difference between these two teams, which is where oddsmakers from online sports book BroburySports.com currently list the point spread at.
I think UAB plays with more focus and urgency this week after losing to FAU. Quarterback David Isabelle is a dual threat under center and can take over this game with his athletic ability. Again, I don’t think SMU should be more than a touchdown favorite, which is why I’m leaning UAB.
