(The Spread) Uncle Mo is a no-go for the 2011 Kentucky Derby, which is significant considering he has long been considered one of the favorites to win at Churchill Downs.

During a press conference early this morning, trainer Todd Pletcher and owner Mike Repole announced the decision to pull Uncle Mo from the Kentucky Derby. After consulting with three veterinarians, it was discovered that Uncle Mo has a gastrointestinal infection, which stems from his disappointing finish at the Wood Memorial on April 9.

So how does Uncle Mo’s news affect the odds at Churchill Downs? Well, quite a bit actually.

When oddsmakers from online sports book SBGGLOBAL.com posted the updated odds for the Derby earlier this week, Uncle Mo was +400 on the money line, which put him right behind favorite Dialed In (+350). When the post positions were drawn on Wednesday, Dialed In moved to +300 on the ML, while Uncle Mo dropped from +400 to +350.

Now Dialed In has dropped even further with the news that Uncle Mo has been scratched. According to oddsmakers, Dialed In is now +250, while Nehro is second at +700. What’s interesting about Nehro’s odds is that his have actually dropped despite the news of Uncle Mo. Nehro went from +600 on Monday to +400 on Wednesday and now he’s up to +700. (Of course, he doesn’t have the best post position either after drawing No. 19 – a gate that has never produced a Kentucky Derby winner.)

Twice The Appeal is another horse that seems to be garnering more attention now that Uncle Mo is out. He went from +2000 on Wednesday, all the way down to +1000. Of course, Calvin Borel will also have the mount on Saturday, which has probably affected Twice The Appeal’s odds the most. Borel, of course, has won three of the last four Kentucky Derbys.
