One of the featured sports in the 2010 Winter Olympics is Men’s Ice Hockey, and the odds are out for which team is most likely to take home the gold.

Each competing country is placed into one of three groups with the groups playing in a round-robin format. From there, all 12 teams will be placed into a bracket based on points and the top four seeds will receive byes into the quarterfinals. The point-system is the same as the NHL with two points for a win, one point for a tie, and no points for a loss.

The tournament is single-elimination and will determine the gold medal winner of this Olympic games.

In this Olympics,

Canada is favored to win the gold with odds of 1/2 according to online sports book Brobury Sports. Other short odds to win are
Russia (2/1),
Sweden (6/1), and

USA (6/1).

Canada has won the gold medal seven times in Olympics history, with the last win coming in 2002.

Canada didn’t take home a medal in the 2006 Olympics, as it finished seventh. This time around, the Canadians will have the home-ice advantage, which plays into the odds. The Canadian team will be highlighted by Sidney Crosby, Jarome Iginla, and Martin Brodeur.

Russia has yet to win a gold medal in men’s ice hockey, but the former
Soviet Union won seven golds. After taking home bronze in 2002,

Russia finished fourth in the 2006 games. The Russian team features Alexander Ovechkin, Pavel Datsyuk, and Evgeni Nabokov.

Sweden is the defending men’s ice hockey champion, winning their second gold medal in the sport in Olympic history in 2006.

Sweden also took home gold in 1994. In 21 Winter Olympics with men’s ice hockey,

Sweden has finished in the top three eight times. Team

Sweden features Henrik Zetterberg, Nicklas Lidstrom, and Henrik Lundqvist.

The

United States hasn’t won gold in men’s ice hockey since 1980. The

U.S. finished with the silver in 2002, but placed eighth in the 2006 games. The

U.S. had medaled just one time since the 1980 Olympics. The 2010 U.S. Team features Ryan Miller, Brian Rafalski, and Chris Drury.
