Men’s 5,000M Odds

One of the first medal events of the 2010 Winter Olympics will be Men’s 5,000 Meter Speed Skating.

In speed skating, competitors race around a 400-meter oval ice rink counter-clockwise.

For this event, current world record holder, Sven Kramer, is favored to take home the gold.

Kramer has odds of 2/5 to win the gold medal according to online sports book Brobury Sports. Other short odds to win are Havard Bokko (3/1), Bob de Jong (4/1), and Enrico Fabris (9/1).

Kramer, who competes for
Netherlands, currently holds the world record in this event with a time of 6:03.32, which het set on Nov. 17, 2007 in

Calgary. After taking home silver in the 2006 Winter Olympics, Kramer has since won three world championships in this event.

Bokko represents

Norway, and had yet to compete in an Olympic event, but won the silver medal in the 2009 World Championships for this event, finishing just behind Kramer. Bokko’s personal best for this race is a time of 6:09.94, which he set in March of 2009.

De Jong also represents

Netherlands, and he was the gold medal winner in the 2006 Olympics for the 10,000 meter speed skate. De Jong’s last world championship in the 5,000 meter race came in 2001. His personal best time in this event is 6:08.76, which he set on Dec. 12, 2009.

Fabris represents

Italy and he took home two gold medals in speed skating in 2006, winning the team pursuit and the 1,500 meters. He was the bronze winner in the 5,000 meter race in the 2006 Olympics and he has taken silver in this event for the 2007 and 2008 World Championships. His personal best time for this race is 6:06.06, which he set on Dec. 12, 2009.
