Reds’ Mahle coming off poor performance vs. Cardinals
Tyler Mahle was hit hard in Friday’s loss to the Cardinals, allowing five runs on nine hits over his 5 1/3 innings of work.
On a positive note, the right-hander did manage to strike out five on the afternoon and didn’t walk a batter. Through five innings, the only damage against him had been a solo homer by Yadier Molina, but the Cardinals broke it open in the sixth. Dexter Fowler clubbed a solo homer, Marcell Ozuna delivered an RBI single and Molina chased him with a two-run single. He’ll try to improve upon his 5.63 ERA and 1.38 WHIP today.
Brewers’ Davies has been bad in early going
Zach Davies was tagged for five runs in 4 1/3 innings in Friday’s loss to the Mets.
Davies gave up seven hits — including two solo homers to Todd Frazier — and walked a pair. He’s now allowed at least five runs in two out of his three starts this season, hence the ugly 6.75 ERA. Maybe the biggest surprise so far this year is that Davies has struck out 18 batters in 16 innings. He amassed just 124 strikeouts in 191 1/3 innings last year.

Prediction:
The fact that the Reds mustered zero runs against Junior Guerra on Tuesday night doesn’t give me a ton of confidence that they’ll contribute enough in the over but I’m going to roll the dice anyway. Davies has been a disaster and this same Cincinnati lineup did produce 10 runs at Miller Park on Monday night so I know they have runs in them. The over is 6-0 in Davies’ last six starts versus the Reds and is 5-0 in his last five home outings versus Cincinnati.
