2011 NFL Week 17 on FOX: Panthers vs. Saints Point Spread Odds & Trends

Panthers vs. Saints Week 17 Odds

NEW ORLEANS, LA (The Spread) – Even though the NFC South is all wrapped up the Saints still have plenty to play for this Sunday when they host the Panthers.

CAROLINA: The Panthers continue to be the most dangerous non-playoff team in the league. One week after knocking off playoff-bound Houston on the road, Carolina absolutely destroyed Tampa Bay 48-16 last Sunday. The win improved the Panthers’ record to 6-9 and 9-6 against the spread. If Cam Newton and Co. could somehow knock off the Saints in New Orleans this week, it would give Carolina a ton of confidence heading into the offseason. And hey, with Newton under center the Panthers will already be brimming with confidence heading into 2012.

NEW ORLEANS: The Saints proved that the Falcons have no business being on the same field as them in Week 16, as New Orleans crushed Atlanta, 45-16. Drew Brees broke Dan Marino’s single-season record for most passing yards in a season as he threw for 307 yards and four touchdowns in the win. The victory allowed the Saints to clinch the NFC South Division but they still need a win over Carolina and a San Francisco loss to St. Louis to wrap up the No. 2 seed in the NFC. If the Niners beat the Rams (as expected), the Saints will secure the No. 3 seed and would host either the Falcons or Lions in the Wild Card round.

ODDS: Oddsmakers have installed the Saints as a 9-point favorite over the Panthers this weekend, while the over/under total for Sunday’s game is currently sitting at 55. Carolina enters the week with a 6-9 overall record and is 3-4 on the road this year, while New Orleans is 12-3 overall and 7-0 at home.

TRENDS: The Panthers are 10-1 against the spread in their last 11 trips to New Orleans and 6-1 ATS in their last seven games against the Saints. The road team is also 18-4 against the number in the last 22 meetings between these two teams while the under is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
