Oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com have made the Dodgers +3000 on the money line to win the 2011 World Series and +250 to win the NL West. They also have an over/under total of 83.5 for number of wins this season.
Offseason Additions: None of the Dodgers’ offseason moves can be considered a “splash,” but they did make a couple of quality signings. They took Juan Uribe from their biggest rivals, the Giants, and also added Jon Garland, Matt Guerrier, Marcus Thames, Gabe Kapler, Tony Gwynn Jr., Blake Hawksworth and Ron Mahay. Replacing Joe Torre at manager is former bench coach Don Mattingly.
Offseason Losses: Perhaps the biggest loss was catcher Russell Martin, who signed a free agent deal with the Yankees over the winter. But he had been injury-prone over the last couple of years, so the Dodgers aren’t going to lose sleep over his departure. The team also parted ways with Scott Podsednik, Reed Johnson, Brad Ausmus, George Sherrill, Jeff Weaver and Ryan Theriot.
Season Outlook: The Dodgers missed the playoffs last year and finished below .500 for the first time in five years, so naturally GM Ned Colletti was busy this year. While he didn’t sign a bunch of marquee names, he did add some value in Uribe and Garland. On paper, L.A. is arguably a better team now than it was a year ago and the boys in blue should definitely contend in 2011. Their lineup is solid, their starting rotation is pretty good and if Jonathan Broxton can hold onto the closer job this season, their bullpen shouldn’t have too many question marks either. But this will be Mattingly’s first year managing a big league club (or any club for that matter), so it remains to be seen whether or not he’s the right man for the job. You can’t have a nickname like “Donny Baseball” without knowing the game, but the inexperience factor might rear its ugly head from time to time. This is a team that has underachieved for awhile, but this is a potential sleeper in the making.
