(The Spread) – After trading away their best bat this offseason, can the pitching staff keep the San Diego Padres afloat this season?

Oddsmakers from online sports book SBGGLOBAL.com have made the Padres +10000 on the money line to win the 2011 World Series, which are the same odds they gave to the Pittsburgh Pirates. (Ouch.) The Pads are also +1200 on the money line to win the NL West and have an over/under total of 75 for number of wins this season.
Offseason Additions: The Padres signed veterans Orlando Hudson, Aaron Harang, Brad Hawpe, Chad Qualls, Dustin Moseley, Jorge Cantu and Edwin Moreno to free agent deals this winter. They also signed Kevin Frandsen Gregg Zaun and Jesus Guzman to minor league contracts. They also acquired youngster Cameron Maybin from the Marlins in exchange for Ryan Webb and Edward Mujica.
Offseason Losses: None was bigger than slugger Adrian Gonzalez. The club traded Gonzo to the Red Sox in exchange for Casey Kelly, Anthony Rizzo, Reymond Fuentes and Eric Patterson. San Diego also parted ways with Jon Garland, Kevin Correia, Chris Young, David Eckstein, Jerry Hairston Jr., Yorvit Torreabla, Scott Hairston, Tony Gwynn, Miguel Tejada, Matt Stairs and Brandon Gomes.
Season Outlook: It’s hard to gauge the Padres’ chances this season in the NL West. Led by Mat Latos, their pitching staff is outstanding (especially the bullpen), although Latos might be the only shore thing in the starting rotation. Losing Gonzalez really hurts, but can anyone really say that this club took a dramatic step backwards because they won’t have Eckstein, Tejada, Torreabla or the Hairston brothers? The Pads couldn’t score runs last year and they won’t be able to this year, so why should anyone assume that they’re going to sink to the bottom of the division after nearing winning the West last year? That said, without Gonzalez feasting off opposing arms, the pitching staff has to be just as good if not better than it was last year. That’s a lot of pressure and chances are, the Pads will sink like a rock.
