CHICAGO (AP) -Chicago Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano and catcher Michael Barrett shoved each other in the dugout Friday, then got into it again in the clubhouse with Barrett going to a hospital.
The confrontations in the 8-5 loss to Atlanta came after the Braves had just scored five runs in the top of the fifth to make it 7-1. Jeff Francoeur’s two-run double made it 4-1 and, with runners on first and second, Barrett allowed a passed ball and threw wildly to third for an error that let another run score. Pitcher Kyle Davies (3-3) and Kelly Johnson followed with RBI doubles.
The two confronted each other before the bottom half of the inning but were separated and Zambrano was sent to the clubhouse by manager Lou Piniella. Barrett went to the clubhouse and wound up with a split lip which was treated at a hospital. Piniella said both players will be disciplined.
Zambrano (5-5), who was pitching on his 26th birthday, allowed a career-high 13 hits in five innings.
Davies allowed one run and six hits in seven innings for the Braves, who had 20 hits.
Chicago has lost nine of 11 and dropped to 22-30.
Dodgers 5, Pirates 4
PITTSBURGH (AP) – Russell Martin homered for the third consecutive game Los Angeles overcame two Pittsburgh leads for the win.
Randy Wolf (7-3) won his fourth straight although he allowed four runs over five innings, and the Dodgers won for the seventh time in nine games. The Pirates lost their fifth in their last six home games and are 10-17 at PNC Park this season.
Relievers Chad Billingsley, Joe Beimel and Takashi Saito combined for four scoreless innings for the Dodgers. Saito got the final five outs for his 16th save in as many chances this season and 26th in a row overall.
Martin’s sixth homer of the season led off the fifth inning and made it 5-4, after the Dodgers had taken a 4-2 lead in a three-run fourth keyed by Tony Abreu’s two-run double. The Pirates, who lost leads of 1-0 and 2-1, tied it in the fourth on Chris Duffy’s two-run triple.
Nationals 4, Padres 3, 10 innings
WASHINGTON (AP) – Pinch-hitter Ronnie Belliard singled home Cristian Guzman in the 10th inning for Washington.
Guzman started the decisive rally with his fourth hit, a one-out single off Cla Meredith (2-3). Ryan Zimmerman’s liner to right sent Guzman to third before Belliard sent a bouncer that second baseman Marcus Giles gloved in short right field but could not make a play on.
Jon Rauch (3-1) got the victory with a scoreless 10th.
Dmitri Young had four hits and two RBIs for Washington. Young has hits in eight straight plate appearances over two games, matching the franchise record set by Montreal’s Andre Dawson from June 4-7, 1983.
San Diego catcher Josh Bard, who was suspended for three games Friday by the commissioner’s office for “aggressive actions” and making contact with umpire Ed Rapuano in Pittsburgh on Thursday, played after appealing the disciplinary action. He had four hits, equaling his career-high, and two RBIs.
Jake Peavy, bidding for a victory in his sixth consecutive start, allowed three runs and 10 hits over seven innings for San Diego. Peavy has not lost since April 30, when the Nationals beat him in San Diego.
Giants 13, Phillies 0
PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Matt Morris allowed only a single over six innings and had a career-best three hits to lead San Francisco.
Fred Lewis hit his first career grand slam, and Ray Durham and Pedro Feliz both hit three-run shots for the Giants. Barry Bonds was 1-for-2 with two walks and stayed stuck on 746 career homers, 10 shy of breaking Hank Aaron’s record.
Shane Victorino’s single with two outs in the sixth inning was the only hit off Morris (6-2). He struck out three, walked three and lowered his ERA to 2.66.
Carlos Ruiz had Philadelphia’s other hit, a single off Steve Kline in the eighth.
The Phillies have lost four straight at home.
The Giants scored five runs in the second inning off starter Adam Eaton (5-4).
Morris, a career .161 hitter coming in, finished 3-for-4 with a double and scored twice.
Diamondbacks 5, Mets 1
NEW YORK (AP) – Cy Young Award winner Brandon Webb dominated a makeshift New York lineup, limiting the Mets to four hits.
It was the eighth straight win for the Diamondbacks, their longest streak since 2003. Arizona had lost 15 of its last 18 games against the Mets and Webb was 1-6 lifetime against New York.
Chris Snyder provided all the offense Webb (5-3) needed with a two-run homer off John Maine (6-3) in the fifth. Stephen Drew added a three-run shot against reliever Guillermo Mota in the eighth.
Webb took advantage of the Mets’ lineup that looked like something out of a spring training game. Regular third baseman David Wright (back spasms) and center fielder Carlos Beltran (bruised knee) joined disabled list outfielders Shawn Green (broken foot) and Moises Alou (strained quad) on the sidelines.
