-Gary Sheffield, Tigers, homered twice and drove in five runs to help Detroit pound Tampa Bay 14-2.
-Orlando Hudson, Diamondbacks, had four hits and four RBIs in Arizona’s 11-5 win over Philadelphia.
-Matt Belisle, Reds, gave up one run in 7 2-3 innings and struck out a career-high eight and Cincinnati edged Pittsburgh 2-1.
-Justin Morneau, Twins, homered and drove in four runs in Minnesota’s 9-2 victory over Chicago.
-Carlos Delgado, Mets, hit two homers, including a game-winning shot in the 12th inning to push New York past San Francisco 5-4.

STINGY
Brad Penny scattered four singles over 6 1-3 innings to help the Los Angeles Dodgers beat Washington 10-0 on Tuesday. Penny improved to 7-1 on the season and has yet to surrender a home run in 70 innings, making him the only pitcher in the majors who has pitched at least 40 innings without allowing a homer. … Josh Beckett returned from the disabled list and ran his record to 8-0, pitching seven innings of three-hit ball to lead Boston past Cleveland 4-2. He became the first Red Sox starter to win his first eight decisions since Roger Clemens opened the 1986 season 14-0.

STOLE HOME
Aaron Hill stole home for Toronto in a 3-2 win over the Yankees on Tuesday. Facing away, Yankees starter Andy Pettitte didn’t notice Hill breaking for the plate until catcher Jorge Posada stepped out and waved his arm. Pettitte threw home but Hill slid in safely ahead of the tag. It was the Blue Jays’ first steal of home since Shea Hillenbrand did it August 6, 2005, against the Yankees.

STREAKS
The New York Yankees’ losing streak reached five on Tuesday with a 3-2 loss to Toronto. … Ichiro Suzuki stretched his hitting streak to 22 games in Seattle’s 4-1 loss to the Angels. … Kevin Youkilis extended his hitting streak to 21 games in Boston’s 4-1 win over Cleveland. It was Youkilis’ ninth consecutive multihit game, the most by a Red Sox batter since Jim Rice in 1978. … Houston lost their ninth in a row for the first time since Sept. 1996 with a 2-1 loss to Cincinnati. … Colorado defeated St. Louis 8-3 and have now won seven in a row for the first time since Sept. 1998.

SNAPPED
Detroit stopped a four-game losing streak with a 14-2 win over Tampa Bay on Tuesday. … White Sox slugger Jermaine Dye had his 14-game hitting streak snapped in a 9-2 loss to Minnesota. … Texas ended a season-worst six-game skid with a 4-0 victory over Oakland.

SPEAKING
“We don’t need Papi. Save him for the playoffs. If we need a big hit, a walkoff, we’ll bring him in.” – Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis, joking about Boston’s success with slugger David Ortiz sitting out his third straight game to rest his hamstring. The Red Sox defeated Cleveland 4-2 Tuesday on the strength of a Youkilis homer and a strong effort on the mound from Josh Beckett.

1914 – Joseph Benz of the White Sox pitched a no-hitter against the Cleveland Indians for a 6-1 victory.
1927 – Detroit first baseman Johnny Neun made an unassisted triple play against Cleveland. He caught Homer Summa’s liner, tagged Charlie Jamieson between first and second and then touched second base before Glenn Myatt could return. The Tigers beat the Indians 1-0.
1937 – Carl Hubbell’s 24-game winning streak ended with a 10-3 loss to the Brooklyn Dodgers. Hubbell’s last defeat came on July 13, 1936, 1-0 to the Chicago Cubs.
1944 – Al Unser’s only home run of the year, a pinch-hit grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, to help the Detroit Tigers beat the New York Yankees 62.
1964 – The New York Mets and the San Francisco Giants played the longest doubleheader in major league history – nine hours, 52 minutes – with the help of a 23-inning game in the nightcap that was won by the visiting Giants 8-6 on run-scoring hits by Del Crandall and Felipe Alou against Galen Cisco. The second game took 7:23 to play.
1970 – Chicago’s Luis Aparicio and Walt Williams each collect five hits in a in a 22-13 rout of the Boston Red Sox. Williams also scored five times. The two teams collected 40 hits, one short of the AL record set in 1950.
1980 – Ken Landreaux went 0-for-4 in Minnesota’s 111 loss to Baltimore, ending his hitting streak at 31 consecutive games. It was the longest streak in the American League since Dom DiMaggio’s 34-game streak in 1949.
1997 – Ila Borders became the first woman to pitch in a regular-season professional game, in the sixth inning of the St. Paul Saints’ Northern League game against Sioux Falls. She gave up three earned runs without getting an out.
1999 – Umpire Frank Pulli used TV replay to take away a home run from Florida’s Cliff Floyd in the fifth inning of the Marlins’ 5-2 loss to St. Louis.
