LSU Season Odds

It has been a bumpy road for LSU since winning the BCS National Championship during the 2007 season, now the Tigers are eying a return trip to the title game in 2010.

Les Miles enters his sixth season with the team, having went 8-5 and 9-4 the last two years since winning the national title.

All three losses in the regular season in 2009 came by 10 points or less for the Tigers, but this year, LSU will need to re-tool, as it returns just 10 starters from 2009.

On offense, the Tigers have six back, led by quarterback Jordan Jefferson, who threw for 2,166 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2009.
Jefferson has three starters back on his offensive line, but only has one main receiving target returning, Terrence Tolliver, who caught 53 passes for 735 yards last season.

The running game will need a lift as well, as the two leading rushers from a year ago are gone. Stevan Ridley is expected to be the main back after rushing for just 180 yards and three scores in 2009.

On defense, LSU only returns four starters, but does bring back Kelvin Sheppard, who led the Tigers in tackles with 110 and also had 7.5 tackles for loss. The secondary brings back two starters in cornerback Patrick Peterson, who had 13 pass deflections in 2009, and safety Brandon Taylor, who had 41 tackles.

On the defensive line, LSU will need to improve as it had just 21 sacks last season while giving up 37. Lazarius Levingston is the lone starter back at defensive tackle, but he went sackless in 2009.

Oddsmakers from online sports book SPORTSBETTING.com currently list LSU at 22/1 to win the 2011 BCS National Championship. The Tigers are also listed at 10/1 to win the SEC and 9/2 to win the SEC West.

LSU has a tough schedule from the start, as it opens up with

North Carolina
in the Georgia Dome. A non-conference meeting at home with
West Virginia along with SEC road games at
Florida,
Auburn, and

Arkansas
make the schedule pretty unattractive. The Tigers have a lot of new faces to implement, and they don’t have time to let them play catch up. With just 22/1 odds, we don’t like putting our money on the Tigers to win it all this year. There are just too many hurdles standing in their way.
