This season, Neuheisel brings back eight starters on offense including sophomore quarterback Kevin Prince, who threw for 2,050 yards and eight scores last year. Prince will have his top two targets in Nelson Rosario and Taylor Embree back this season as well. The two combined for 87 receptions and over 1,300 yards receiving.
In the running game, Johnathan Franklin is back for his second year after rushing for 566 yards and five scores in 2009. He will be aided by an offensive line that features all upperclassmen and three returning starters.
On defense, UCLA brings back five starters from a group that allowed 21.2 points and 334 yards per-game. The Bruins return most of their secondary, including First Team All-American Rahim Moore at free safety.
The Bruins have a difficult non-conference schedule with a home game against
Oddsmakers from online sports book SBGGLOBAL currently list UCLA as 50/1 long shots to win the 2011 BCS National Championship. The Bruins are also given 7/2 odds to win the PAC-10.
While UCLA should be optimistic for a breakout season and a sturdy home in the top-25 rankings, it would be a big stretch to see the Bruins winning either the national championship or even the PAC-10 title. UCLA has a very difficult schedule and is still young at the skill positions. The Bruins will need a solid defensive effort all year to carry it while the offense comes around in order to contend for the BCS title.
