Mariners Season Odds
After acquiring ace pitcher Cliff Lee this offseason, the Seattle Mariners feel as though they have the pieces in place to make a postseason run. But do they have enough offense?
The Mariners were busy this offseason, inking Chone Figgins, Jack Wilson, Ken Griffey Jr., Erik Bedard, Ryan Garko, Ryan Langerhans and Eric Byrnes to contracts. They also signed Felix Hernandez to a new five-year, $78 million contract and centerfielder Franklin Gutierrez to a four-year, $20.2 million deal.
But those moves pale in comparison to the trade they orchestrated to land Lee from the Phillies, giving up pitcher Phillippe Aumont, J.C. Ramirez and outfielder Tyson Gillies in the process. They also traded Carlos Silva to the Cubs in exchange for Milton Bradley.
Oddsmakers from online sports book SPORTSBETTING.com have made the Mariners 16/1 to win the 2010 World Series and 9/1 to win the American League Pennant. They’re also 2/1 to win the AL West and have an over/under total of 83.5 for number of wins in 2010.
In Hernandez and Lee, the Mariners now have one of the best 1-2 punches in baseball and Ian Snell makes a quality third arm in the rotation. David Aardsma has turned into a solid closer and Sean White is a fine reliever.
But the M’s will sink or swim this year based on how productive their offense is. The additions of Figgins, Bradley and Casey Kotchman will certainly help, but their strength remains in Ichiro Suzuki at the top of the order. The lineup lacks major punch, but then again – pitching and defense will carry this club throughout the season. If the Mariners can figure out a way to score just enough runs to get by on a nightly basis, there’s no reason to think they can’t win the AL Wild Card, if not unseat the Angels in the AL West.
