Giants Season Odds
Do the San Francisco Giants finally have enough offense to make a run? Or will their outstanding pitching once again be wasted? Let’s take a look at their odds.
The Giants made a couple of additions to their offense this offseason, signing Mark DeRosa and Aubrey Huff to free agent contracts, while also re-signing Freddy Sanchez, Bengie Molina and Juan Uribe to new deals. The club also locked up four vital pieces of their pitching staff by signing Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Brian Wilson and Jeremy Affeldt to new deals.
San Francisco’s notable losses this offseason were Randy Winn, Rich Aurilia, Randy Johnson, Bob Howry, Justin Miller, Brad Penny, Brian Bocock, Merkin Valdez and Noah Lowry, who has battled injuries over the past several years.
Oddsmakers from online sports book SPORTSBETTING.com have made the G-Men a 22/1 long shot to win the 2010 World Series and 10/1 to win the National League Pennant. They’re also 3/1 to win the NL West and have an over/under total of 82.5 for number of wins in 2010.
There’s a ton of optimism brewing in San Francisco these days – and for good reason. Their pitching staff is solid, headlined by Lincecum and Cain at the top of the rotation and steady performers Barry Zito, Jonathan Sanchez and Todd Wellemeyer at the back end. When he can keep his emotions in check, Sanchez can frustrate hitters just as much as Lincecum and Cain can.
The problem is that the Giants’ offense is once again a huge concern. Pablo Sandoval is the only stud in the lineup, although DeRosa, Huff, Molina and Aaron Rowand can be nice complementary pieces. This club doesn’t need a ton of offense in order to be successful, but it would be nice if a guy like Freddy Sanchez could stay healthy and Edgar Renteria did anything productive at all. If the Giants’ offense fails to score runs early in the season, this club can’t waste time in giving youngsters like John Bowker and Buster Posey (the team’s top hitting prospect) a chance to contribute.
