Shagaf Kentucky Derby Odds
After a poor showing in the Wood Memorial, Shagaf will attempt to pull off the upset on Saturday when he races in the 2016 Kentucky Derby.
The Odds: According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, Shagaf is a 20/1 long shot to win at Churchill Downs on Saturday. Nyquist remains the Derby favorite at 3/1, while Exaggerator has the next-best odds to win at 8/1. Creator, Mohaymen and Gun Runner are all 10/1, respectively.
A Snapshot: In just four career starts, Shagaf has three wins and career earnings of $328,800 ($82,200). Owned by Shadwell Stable and trained by Chad Brown, Shagaf’s pedigree is Bernardini – Muhaawara, by Unbridled’s Song. A natural stalker, Shagaf’s jockey on Saturday will be Joel Rosario.

BETTING OVERVIEW: When doing your prep for this year’s Kentucky Derby, don’t eliminate Shagaf just because he finished fifth in the Wood Memorial, which was his final prep for Churchill Downs. The Wood Memorial was the first time Shagaf ran on a muddy track and despite the poor surface, he fought to the finish line while finishing four lengths behind Outwork. Prior to that poor showing, he was unbeaten in three starts and had a 110 Equibase Speed Figure. All of that being said, with only four career starts and a poor prep coming into Saturday, can Shagaf rebound? There’s no doubting his talent, but if you invest in Shagaf at Churchill Downs you’re doing so with the belief that the Wood Memorial was an aberration.
