RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -Justin Williams was activated by the Carolina Hurricanes before Thursday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Hurricanes placed defenseman Dennis Seidenberg on injured reserve with a leg injury.
Earlier in the day, Williams said he was healthy enough to play against the Penguins.
Coach Paul Maurice said that while “you’re not going to see him play 20 minutes,” he does expect Williams to rejoin a power-play unit that is the NHL’s second-worst.
Williams hasn’t skated since tearing his Achilles’ tendon in September. That injury was expected to cost him at least four months.
He also missed 43 games last season after knee surgery.
Seidenberg missed the Hurricanes’ loss to Anaheim on Sunday with the injury
Williams’ expected return comes during Maurice’s first game back behind Carolina’s bench. The Hurricanes coach was hired Wednesday when Peter Laviolette was fired.
