LOS ANGELES (AP) One spectacular shot by Jeff Carter kept the Los Angeles Kings rolling on an increasingly impressive winning streak.
Carter scored his 10th goal of the NHL season 1:06 into overtime, as the Kings beat the Chicago Blackhawks 2-1 on Saturday night for their season-best fifth consecutive victory.
Alec Martinez scored and Peter Budaj stopped 18 shots for the Kings, who persevered through a back-and-forth game.
These Kings don’t often light up scoreboards, and they aren’t the same defensive powerhouse without injured goalie Jonathan Quick. But they’re still thriving in coach Darryl Sutter’s disciplined system – even against Chicago, the Western Conference leaders.
”We’ve got a good chemistry with the team now,” said Budaj, who is 12-6-1 after emerging as Quick’s replacement. ”We have very good personnel here, and a great group of guys. We stick together.”
Ryan Getzlaf had a goal and an assist as the Anaheim Ducks snapped a three-game skid by beating the San Jose Sharks 232.
Ryan Garbutt and Rickard Rakell also scored for Anaheim and Jonathon Bernier had 23 saves.
Getlaf gave the Ducks the lead for good at 12:59 of the second. With Justin Braun in the box for elbowing Corey Perry, Getlaf beat Martin Jones for just his second goal of the season.
Logan Couture and Dylan DeMelo scored for San Jose while Jones had 23 saves.
Alex Galchenyuk scored at 3:37 of overtime as the NHL-leading Montreal Canadiens beat the Detroit Red Wings 2-1.
Brendan Gallagher also scored to help Montreal improve to 16-4-2. Carey Price stopped 32 shots. Justin Abdelkader scored for Detroit and Petr Mrazek made 22 saves.
”We got a really good start, but Mrazek was outstanding. Both goalies were outstanding, really,” Montreal coach Michel Therrien said. ”That’s why it was 0-0 into the third period. I thought we gave them too much momentum in the second period, and we never really got it back.”
Sidney Crosby tied it with 14 seconds left in regulation then Kris Letang scored the only goal in a shootout to lift Pittsburgh past New Jersey 4-3.
Penguins rookie Jake Guentzel picked up his third goal in six days and Tom Kuhnhackl also scored. Evgeni Malkin had three assists while extending his points streak to eight games.
Mike Cammalleri scored twice and Vernon Fiddler added a goal for New Jersey.
”I thought we responded the right way,” Crosby said. ”We had enough chances to win the game and it just took a while to finally get there.”
Jaden Schwartz had two goals in the third period and David Perron scored the only goal in a shootout as St. Louis beat Minnesota Wild 4-3 in a shootout.
Paul Stastny also scored while Jake Allen stopped 28 shots and all four shootout attempts.
Jacob Markstrom had 32 saves and made three consecutive stops in a shootout to help Vancouver get a 3-2 shootout win over the Colorado Avalanche.
”We needed Marky in overtime,” Vancouver coach Willie Desjardins said. ”I thought we contained them OK during the game, but overtime they had some chances and Markstrom came up big.”
Mitch Marner set up a pair of goals and Auston Matthews scored for the second straight game as the Toronto Maple Leafs beat Washington 4-2 to end a three-game losing streak.
Aleksander Barkov scored the shootout winner to lift Florida past Columbus 2-1 while Kyle Turris scored his team-leading 10th goal to help Ottawa Senators beat Carolina Hurricanes 2-1.
