NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -Jaromir Jagr and Brandon Dubinsky scored second-period goals against Martin Brodeur, spoiling the New Jersey goalie's second chance at 500 wins and lifting the New York Rangers to a 4-2 victory over the Devils on Wednesday night.
After the teams traded goals in the opening 2 minutes of the game, Dubinsky snapped a 1-1 tie - off an assist from Jagr - to give the Rangers a lead they didn't relinquish.
Rangers rookie defenseman Marc Staal gave New York a 4-1 lead 4:13 into the third period with his first NHL goal, a rising shot from the left circle that beat Brodeur over the left shoulder.
That was enough to keep him stuck at 499 wins, second only to league record-holder Patrick Roy, who retired with 551. Brodeur, who made 20 saves, will have to wait until at least Friday to get the milestone victory when the Devils face the New York Islanders. New Jersey lost on Long Island last Saturday during Brodeur's first shot at 500, and the 35-year-old netminder sat out Monday at Pittsburgh.
Jamie Langenbrunner scored twice for the Devils in his first game following offseason surgery.
Lightning 6, Hurricanes 1
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Vincent Lecavalier had three goals and two assists to set a team record with his sixth consecutive multipoint game, leading the Lightning to the win.
Lecavalier scored twice and also assisted on goals by Paul Ranger and Martin St. Louis during a five-goal second period that put the Lightning ahead 5-0. The center, who has five goals and 11 points over his past six games, completed the hat trick with a short-handed breakaway goal with 5:09 remaining in the third.
Johan Holmqvist made 28 saves for the Lightning, who have won four in a row after a six-game skid. Tampa Bay also got a goal from Vinny Prospal.
Jeff Hamilton scored for Carolina, which has lost just twice - both to Tampa Bay - in its last six games.
Sharks 4, Stars 3, SO
DALLAS (AP) - Rookie Devin Setoguchi and Patrick Marleau connected in the shootout after scoring regulation goals, and San Jose beat Dallas in the Stars' first game since a major front office shake-up.
Owner Tom Hicks made several management changes Tuesday and Wednesday, hoping to jump-start his struggling team. Dallas was able to rally from a two-goal third-period deficit to send the game to overtime before losing its fourth in a row at home.
Sergei Zubov missed on the Stars' first shootout attempt, then Setoguchi connected on San Jose's leadoff shot.
Jussi Jokinen shot wide in the second round for the Stars and Marleau beat goalie Marty Turco from the slot to give San Jose its third straight victory.
Hicks fired general manager Doug Armstrong on Tuesday, replacing him with former star Brett Hull and assistant GM Les Jackson as co-interim general managers. Hicks moved team president Jim Lites into a full-time role in his sports marketing firm Wednesday, giving the team president's job to Jeff Cogen, who had filled the same position for Hicks' baseball franchise, the Texas Rangers.
Blue Jackets 4, Blackhawks 2
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Rick Nash, Sergei Fedorov and Jason Chimera each had a goal and an assist, and the Blue Jackets snapped a four-game skid.
Dan Fritsche also scored for Columbus, now in second place in the Central Division ahead of Chicago, and 6-2-1 at Nationwide Arena.
Defensemen Duncan Keith and Dustin Byfuglien scored for the Blackhawks, who had won three straight and five of six.
Fritsche made it 3-1 at 9:58 of the second period, roofing a backhand centering pass from Chimera on a giveaway by Jason Williams.
Pascal Leclaire made 16 saves for Columbus, improving to 8-4 on the year.
