CHICAGO (AP) -Chicago Blackhawks senior vice president Bob Pulford was reassigned Thursday, the first major move by the team since Rocky Wirtz took over as chairman Oct. 5 after his father, William Wirtz, died last month.
Pulford, who's been with the Blackhawks since 1977 in numerous roles, including several stints as coach and general manager, was made vice president of Wirtz Corp., the team said in a news release.
Pulford became Chicago's coach and general manager in 1977 and its senior vice president in 1990. Several times he reassumed the general manager's role and the head coach's duties following shake-ups for the team that hasn't won the Stanley Cup since 1961.
With Pulford in charge, the Blackhawks once won eight division titles and made the NHL playoffs 20 straight seasons. Last year, Chicago missed the playoffs for the eighth time in nine seasons.
As a player, Pulford was a six-time NHL All-Star before becoming head coach of the Los Angeles Kings in 1972. He was NHL Coach of the Year after the 1974-75 season, when the Kings posted 105 points.
Pulford was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1991.
In his new role, Pulford will serve as Blackhawks liaison on NHL affairs. He also will continue in his role as alternate governor to the NHL.
Rocky Wirtz took control of the team last week after his younger brother, Peter Wirtz, resigned as vice president of the Blackhawks. Peter Wirtz is now running the family's food service business.
