MONTREAL (AP) -Jacques Martin is reportedly the new coach of the Montreal Canadiens.
The team scheduled an afternoon news conference Monday. Several Canadian Web sites say Martin has been tapped for the job by Montreal general manager Bob Gainey.
Martin is the Florida Panthers’ GM. He would replace Gainey behind the Canadiens’ bench. Gainey took over after firing Guy Carbonneau on March 9. The Canadiens were swept by Boston in the first round of the playoffs.
This will be Martin’s fourth NHL coaching job, following St. Louis, Ottawa and Florida. He has a career winning percentage of .551 and was coach of the year in 1999.
Martin has a deal with Florida through the 2011-12 season and it isn’t clear if the Canadiens must compensate the Panthers.
