RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -Martin Brodeur is getting a rare night off, one day after setting the NHL record for regular-season wins by a goalie.
Brodeur, who passed Hall of Famer Patrick Roy on Tuesday with his 552nd victory, served as the backup to Kevin Weekes when the New Jersey Devils faced the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday night.
Brodeur went 8-1 in making nine straight starts since returning from an elbow injury that forced him to sit out 50 games this season.
Weekes, the backup to Scott Clemmensen for most of the time that Brodeur was sidelined, hadn’t started since Feb. 19 against the Tampa Bay Lightning. He came on in relief on March 7 when the New York Islanders beat the Devils 7-3, Brodeur’s only loss since his return.
