DULUTH, Ga. (AP) -Atlanta Thrashers captain Ilya Kovalchuk has met with general manager Don Waddell about trading one of the league’s most prolific scorers.
Kovalchuk said Thursday that Waddell told him the team can’t meet his demands for a maximum NHL contract and the Thrashers must deal him before the March 3 trade deadeline.
But Kovalchuk, who will become an unrestricted free agent when the season ends, isn’t ruling out the chance that he could sign a new contract with Atlanta.
Waddell was not available for comment, and Kovalchuk’s agent Jay Grossman did not immediately return phone messages from The Associated Press.
