The Ducks took Game 1 of the series 3-2 and they have now won five of six meetings with the Flames this season. Anaheim has also won nine of the last 10 against Calgary overall. Anaheim is 47-23-13 on the season following the win while going 30-8-4 at home. Calgary is 45-34-4 overall and 21-17-4 on the road.
Anaheim grinded out the win in Game 1 despite being the more impressive team most of the way. The Flames established a 2-1 lead thanks to goals from Sean Monahan and Sam Bennett. Anaheim got back with two goals in a four-minute span in the second from Rickard Rakell and Jakob Silfverberg. The Ducks then held on from there. John Gibson made 30 saves in the win while Brian Elliott had 38 saves for the Flames. Anaheim dominated in the faceoff circle, going 49-29 over the Flames. The Ducks also had the 41-32 edge in shots on goal.
If Anaheim continue to put up a number of shots on goal, the Ducks will be able to go up 2-0 tonight. Elliott doesn’t have great numbers against the Ducks in his career and his defense didn’t do him any favors by making him take on 41 shots in Game 1. The Flames aren’t great on the road either and if they can’t improve their faceoff numbers, then they aren’t going to find a way to win.
