FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) – Mark Sanchez was nearly benched in his last game, a situation the struggling New York Jets quarterback is trying to keep from ruining his confidence.
Sanchez says Wednesday that he needs to be “thick-skinned,” knowing fans, media and people “even in the building” might be doubting he can turn things around down the stretch.
Sanchez has thrown five interceptions and only one touchdown in his last three games, and coach Rex Ryan considered yanking him in the third quarter of the Jets’ 10-6 loss to Miami last Sunday.
Despite issuing a vote of confidence, Ryan says Wednesday he’d consider benching Sanchez “if I thought it was the best thing for our team.”
The Jets (9-4) play the Steelers (10-3) in Pittsburgh on Sunday.
