BEREA, Ohio (AP) -With 70,000 Cleveland fans screaming their lungs out and the Browns needing a late touchdown to tie the New York Jets, rookie quarterback Colt McCoy calmly entered the huddle, looked into his teammates’ eyes and made a promise.
“He said, ‘Look at me, we’re going to win this game’,” tight end Evan Moore said.
The kid was almost right.
McCoy threw a TD pass with 44 seconds left in regulation, but the Browns fell 26-20 to the Jets, who scored with 16 seconds left in overtime. Still, McCoy had his fourth straight strong performance, making it more likely he will retain his starting job even after Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace return from injuries.
Coach Eric Mangini said McCoy’s late scoring drive strengthened the coaching staff’s trust in him.
