ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) -The Detroit Lions on Wednesday claimed tight end John Owens off waivers and re-signed another tight end, Rudy Sylvan, to the practice squad.
Detroit drafted Owens out of Notre Dame in the fifth round (138th overall) in 2002 and he spent his first two seasons with the Lions. He split the 2004 season between Detroit and Chicago and played in 2005-06 with the New Orleans Saints.
Owens has appeared in 29 NFL games with nine starts, eight with the Lions.
Sylvan, a rookie out of Ohio University, was activated from the practice squad for Sunday’s game at Arizona and was waived the next day. He has appeared in four games with one start for Detroit.
The Lions host the New York Giants on Sunday in a meeting of 6-3 teams.
