CHICAGO (AP) -Former Chicago Bears quarterback Jim McMahon says he is concerned about how playing football has affected his mental health.
McMahon tells the Chicago Tribune that his memory is “pretty much gone.” He says he frequently walks into a room and forgets why he’s there.
McMahon has worked with neurosurgeons and is planning to get his brain scanned. He also has decided to host a fundraiser in Chicago, with the proceeds going to educational programs and clinics about brain trauma for area youth coaches.
Laurie Navon, McMahon’s girlfriend, tells ESPN.com on Wednesday that the quarterback gets depressed “because he can’t do what he used to do and wants to do.” She says he is planning to become more active in raising awareness of brain trauma.
