WASHINGTON (AP) – The head of the NFL Players Association says the union is not in a battle with the league over head injuries – but still wants to reduce their impact.
Union head DeMaurice Smith made the comments at a news conference Tuesday, on the eve of a congressional hearing Wednesday into legal issues relating to players’ head injuries. Smith will testify along with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, medical experts and former players, including former New York Giants running back Tiki Barber.
The hearing comes following a preliminary study done for the NFL that suggested retired pro football players may have a higher rate than normal of Alzheimer’s disease or other memory problems.
