NEW YORK (AP) – The NFL has praised players, specifically Brandon Meriweather and James Harrison, for their clean play Sunday after the league cracked down on illegal hits.
Ray Anderson, the league’s football operations chief, says both Meriweather and Harrison “heeded our emphasis” on eliminating flagrant fouls by making clean, hard tackles in their team’s victories. Harrison was fined $75,000 and Meriweather was fined $50,000 for illegal hits to defenseless opponents last week, when the NFL announced it would begin suspending players for such tackles.
Anderson says no flags were thrown for illegal hits to defenseless player in the 13 games Sunday, calling it “a good start” toward eliminating such fouls.
