New York Jets running back Leon Washington broke his right leg in the first quarter against the Oakland Raiders on Sunday and underwent surgery after the game.
Washington went down on his only carry when a defender rolled up on his right leg after a 6-yard run. Teammates said the bone broke through the skin, and it was visible on the field. Washington was helped off the field by two trainers and then taken away on a cart.
He was diagnosed with a broken right fibula and underwent surgery immediately after the Jets’ 38-0 victory. The team said he would be out indefinitely.
“That’s unfortunate,” coach Rex Ryan said. “It’s obviously a severe injury, but hopefully he’ll be joining us sooner than later.”
It’s the second major injury to a key player for the Jets in as many games. Nose tackle Kris Jenkins was lost for the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in New York’s 16-13 overtime loss to Buffalo last Sunday.
Houston wide receiver Andre Johnson bruised his chest in the Texans’ 24-21 win over the 49ers, and coach Gary Kubiak said he was taken to a hospital to be examined.
rned,” Kubiak said. “He could not go at the end and so there is concern until we see.”
Johnson was shaken up on a play in the fourth quarter and remained on the field on his hands and knees for a few minutes before walking to the sideline. He returned for one play a few minutes later, but was held out of the Texans’ next series.
Indianapolis wide receiver Reggie Wayne returned to the field in the third quarter after injuring his groin earlier against St. Louis.
Wayne and running back Donald Brown (sprained shoulder) both were sidelined in the second quarter.
Wayne had six receptions for 76 yards and a 6-yard touchdown before leaving with a strained groin muscle. He caught four passes for 61 yards on the opening possession.
New Orleans defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis was forced from the game against the Miami Dolphins because of a sprained right knee. Ellis was hurt late in the second quarter and helped off the field.
Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Kyle Williams did not return against Carolina after leaving in the first quarter with a knee injury.
Williams was questionable going in with a sore shoulder, but was active and got the start. He hurt his knee on the first defensive series and walked to the locker room.
Williams joins a long list of injuries for the Bills, who were without starting safeties Bryan Scott and Donte Whitner because of ankle injuries.
triots defensive lineman Ty Warren injured his ankle against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and was driven off the field in a cart.
It was unclear which ankle was injured at Wembley Stadium, but Warren’s right shoe was off as he was being led into the tunnel.
Kansas City center Rudy Niswanger left the Chiefs’ game against the San Diego Chargers with a left knee injury.
Niswanger was injured late in the first quarter during Kansas City’s second drive and limped off the field.
Wade Smith, who started in place of injured left tackle Branden Albert, replaced Niswanger. Barry Richardson took over at left tackle.
