EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) – Jerick McKinnon has had more than just the NFL and Minnesota’s offense to learn this year.
The rookie was never really a true running back before, either.
McKinnon spent much of his time at Georgia Southern as an option-style quarterback, carrying the ball plenty of times but not in a traditional way. He even played some cornerback and wide receiver.
But the Vikings drafted him in the third round with an eye toward making him a standard running back.
McKinnon has steadily gained their trust while his development has been accelerated after Adrian Peterson’s unexpected hiatus. He’s topped 100 yards rushing twice in the last four games.
The Vikings play at Tampa Bay on Sunday.
