BEREA, Ohio (AP) – There have been two constants in 12 mostly awful seasons of football for the Cleveland Browns: change and Phil Dawson.
Despite playing on some wretched teams, the veteran kicker has been better than good – with one of the steadiest and most accurate legs in the NFL since 1999. On Sunday in Pittsburgh, Dawson can surpass Hall of Famer Lou “The Toe” Groza for the most career field goals in team history.
Dawson tied Groza’s mark with a 19-yard chip shot against Atlanta last week. The 35-year-old Texan is in his final year under contract, but the Browns don’t appear to be in any hurry to re-sign Dawson, who has been good in every imaginable weather condition and on any surface.
