BOSTON (AP) -NFL owners have tabled discussions of creating an offseason window for teams to negotiate with free agents before the players actually become available on the open market.
While the issue will be discussed at the winter meetings next March, the owners prefer stricter enforcement of current tampering rules, according to NFL competition committee co-chairman Rich McKay.
But there has been sentiment for establishing a short period just before free agency begins, usually in early March, when teams can talk to, but not physically meet with or sign, players whose contracts have expired. Such a window could ease concerns about teams making early contact with those players, which constitutes tampering.
