SAN DIEGO (AP) – Chargers linebacker Shaun Phillips was picked as AFC Defensive Player of the Week, and actually talked about it.
Phillips was honored for his four sacks and an interception return for a touchdown in San Diego’s 41-10 win against the Arizona Cardinals.
Phillips has granted only one interview since the Chargers’ 17-14 playoff loss to the New York Jets. He was penalized 15 yards for head-butting a Jets player, one of three personal fouls against the Chargers during a mistake-filled game.
Phillips, whose six sacks are second-most in the NFL, says he’s been mum with the press so he could focus on football and because he wants his teammates to get the glory.
NFL players are required to speak with the media once a week and after games.
