ATLANTA (AP) -Carolina quarterback Jake Delhomme had to leave against the Atlanta Falcons with an ailing right elbow Sunday, but he doesn't believe the injury is serious.
Delhomme began shaking his arm and motioning toward the sideline as soon as he delivered a short pass to Brad Hoover late in the third quarter. David Carr played the rest of the game, finishing off a 27-20 victory.
Delhomme said the injury actually happened earlier in the quarter.
``It didn't feel right,'' he said. ``It was just kind of bothering me a little bit. It's like a strain. Hopefully, it's just a little muscle in there. We'll see.''
The quarterback couldn't even make it all the way to the sideline, dropping to a knee while still on the field before finally walking off. Carr finished the touchdown drive and also directed the Panthers to a field goal.
``It was too crucial a drive to stay in,'' Delhomme said. ``We needed to get points on that drive. I didn't want to be macho.''
The injury actually occurred on Carolina's previous possession, when Delhomme was sacked by John Abraham. The quarterback still managed a tying 5-yard touchdown pass to Jeff King.
``I was able to throw a couple of more passes after that,'' Delhomme said.
Carr, the former No. 1 overall pick, was 3-of-4 for 56 yards in relief. Delhomme, meanwhile, got his arm iced down and planned to undergo an X-ray when he got back to Carolina.
``I tried to run the team like Jake had been doing,'' Carr said.
